Does Medicare Cover GLP-1 Medications?

Medicare GLP-1 coverage is not one simple yes-or-no question. It can depend on the medication, why it is prescribed, the Medicare coverage path, plan formulary rules, prior authorization, pharmacy network status, and current availability.

Some GLP-1 drugs may be covered under Medicare Part D when prescribed for a use that fits Part D coverage rules and the plan's requirements. CMS also describes the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge as a separate demonstration for eligible Part D beneficiaries, operating outside the ordinary Part D payment flow for eligible drugs and uses during the demonstration period.

Use this page as a checklist, not a coverage decision. Before relying on any listing or article, confirm the exact drug name, diagnosis, plan, formulary tier, prior authorization criteria, and pharmacy network directly with the plan, prescriber, pharmacy, Medicare, or a SHIP counselor.

What to check next

Confirm the exact medication, diagnosis, formulary tier, prior authorization requirement, step therapy status, and pharmacy network before relying on a listing.

Useful documents

Plan formularies, Evidence of Coverage documents, pharmacy directories, and written prior-authorization criteria are more reliable than verbal summaries alone.
