Wegovy Medicare Coverage Questions
Wegovy coverage questions should start with the reason the prescriber is using the medication. FDA has described Wegovy as approved for chronic weight management and for reducing the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events in certain adults with established cardiovascular disease and overweight or obesity.
For Medicare, the practical question is whether the specific use is handled through a Part D plan, the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge, or another plan process. CMS beneficiary guidance says GLP-1 drugs prescribed for uses coverable under the basic Part D benefit, such as Wegovy for reducing major adverse cardiovascular event risk in eligible adults, are not furnished through the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge.
Before scheduling or filling, ask the plan and prescriber which diagnosis is being submitted, whether Wegovy is on formulary, whether prior authorization or step therapy applies, and which pharmacies are in network.
